As the temperature gets colder and the sky turns greyer, the idea of upping sticks and moving to Greece has never been more tempting! But since Brexit, it has become increasingly more difficult for British citizens to live and work in Greece. You’ll need a work visa, something that is not easy to get.

But all is not lost! In December 2020, the Greek government passed a law (4825/4.9.2021) enabling non-EU citizens to live in Greece and work remotely.

The new digital nomad visa gives non-EU citizens, such as British citizens, the right of legal residence in Greece, but not the right to Greek dependent employment or business activity in Greece. In other words, you cannot work for a Greek company with the digital nomad visa.

But, you can work for a foreign employer, such as one in the UK, or your own business. And here’s where it gets good – you will only be taxed on 50% of your foreign income for the first seven years of residency in Greece!

Who is eligible for the Greek digital nomad visa?

Third country nationals (i.e., non-EU citizens) who are employed by, and work remotely for, a company based outside of Greece, or who are self-employed with clients based outside of Greece.

You must be able to prove you have sufficient funds to support yourself and any dependents, without burdening the national social welfare system.

For a single person, you must have a minimum of €3,500 per month.

Would my family members be eligible for a visa?

Yes! However, if you’re moving with your spouse or cohabitant, you will need to prove an additionally 20% of funds. For every child, you will need an additional 15%.

It is important to note, that your family members also do not have the right to work for a Greek company with this visa.

How long is the Greek digital nomad visa valid?

The initial digital nomad visa lasts for 12 months, but if you want to stay longer, you can apply for a digital nomad residence permit. This will then last for an additional two years, and you have the option to renew it again. Family members will also be included in the renewal.
