Greece’s tourism industry booms in early 2022

It looks as though 2022 is going to be a good year for the Greek economy. The latest figures from the Bank of Greece show that Greece’s tourist revenue grew 306.2% from January to February of this year, equating to €273 million.

This is a positive sign for the country which is heavily dependent on tourism. The sector accounts for 25% of Greece’s economic output and one in four jobs.

Greece has recently announced that it will be lifting all Covid-19 entry restrictions in May. From the 2 May, all travellers will be able to visit Greece whether they have been vaccinated or not. There will also be no need to present proof of Covid recovery or a negative Covid test on arrival.

Covid cases in Greece have fallen steadily in April, with the rolling 7-day average currently at 6,276 cases. This is much lower than the country’s peak of 35,451 in January. In addition, 73% of the population is now fully vaccinated.
