United Airlines is launching regular flights from Faro to New York, to run four times a month between Portugal and the USA.

This new route will first take to the skies in May 2024 and run four times per week, connecting the Algarve’s main city with New York Newark.

While most of the attention is on the boost for Portugal’s tourism, the news is also a big deal for residents of the Algarve. Having the “Big Apple” just over eight hours away will provide exciting new holiday options for those living in southern Portugal – not just in New York, but elsewhere in the USA too. Flying from a relatively quiet airport will also prove much less stressful than getting to America via Lisbon or London!

A new flight route from New York to Faro is set to begin in 2024

New flight route to Portugal’s Faro Airport

Flights from Faro to NYC will leave on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. They will depart Faro at 11.45am and arrive at 3.05pm local time. (New York is five hours behind mainland Portugal).

The return flights are overnight “red eye” flights. Running on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, they will depart Newark at 9.50pm local time, arriving back in Faro at 10am the following morning.

The flights from Faro to New York are already on sale. Roundtrip economy fares start at around £570, but rise closer to £1000 in the peak summer months. Business class and Economy Plus fares are also available on the route, which will be using a Boeing 757-200.

Initially, the route will only operate during the summer season, with the last flight from Faro to Newark planned to depart on September 24th, 2024.

Thierry Ligonnière, the CEO of Portugal’s airport operator ANA said, “we welcome the start of United Airlines’ operation at Faro Airport. The new New York-Faro route represents the commitment of ANA/Vinci Airports to the growth of connectivity in a region served by Gago Coutinho International Airport in Faro, continuing its commitment to the Algarve region.”

The sand is still in easy reach, but so is the atmosphere of a small, authentic city.

Other flights from Faro

It’s not widely known, but there’s long been another direct route between Faro and North America. Air Transat operates a route between Faro and Toronto. This runs year-round at a frequency of once or twice per week. When booked in advance, these flights can prove surprisingly affordable, sometimes coming in below £500 return.

The next furthest direct destination from Faro is Ponta Delgada in the Azores, on a route that only operates from June to September. Faro is, of course, extremely well-connected with the rest of Europe. There are regular flights, all year round, from London and all over the UK. Other destinations with regular flights include:

  • Oslo
  • Stockholm
  • Vienna
  • Munich
  • Berlin
  • Geneva
  • Paris
  • Amsterdam
  • Barcelona
  • Rome

It’s worth noting that some routes only run over the peak of summer. Others operate for an extended season, typically running their last flights of the year in November.

Faro is becoming a connected global hub, generating more tourism, but also offering an increasing number of options for occasional commuters. It’s great news for international residents who wish to use their Algarve home as a base to explore the rest of Europe and beyond. Hopefully the route will prove successful, and incentivize airlines to add more new routes to and from Faro in the years ahead.
