Sub-Saharan Africa is defined as the area of the African continent that lies south of the Sahara and includes popular countries like Cape Verde, Ghana, Mauritius, and the Seychelles.

Each of these countries offers a completely different experience. Consequently, some are more appealing to the retiree or digital nomad seeking a beach side escape. While others offer emerging economies with plenty of opportunities for corporate workers and entrepreneurs. If you’re looking to relocate abroad, here are some countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to consider.

Mauritius is as close as you can get to paradise.

Mauritius

The island of Mauritius is as close as you can get to paradise, and many UK retirees are moving there to enjoy the idyllic beaches, friendly people and easy way of living. Therefore, the tourism industry in Mauritius is thriving, making it one of the world’s most popular honeymoon destinations. Furthermore, business people too are relocating to the island with fiscal incentives in place and a growing economy. Consequently, the expat community is very diverse with South African, British and French making up a large portion of it. Cape Verde

Cape Verde is one of the most popular countries for British retirees and expats, offering stretches of idyllic sandy beaches, a pleasant way of life and a warm year-round climate. Located 500-kilometres off the African coast, Cape Verde is a fusion of cultures with a fascinating blend of Creole, Portuguese and English-speaking residents. There are reasonable job opportunities, though most people who relocate there would rather relax than work! The cost of living is cheaper than the UK, though is more expensive than the rest of Africa.

Ghana

Ghana is famous for its friendly locals, making it one of the most welcoming countries in Africa. It has a laid-back atmosphere and experiences substantially less crime than other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. The expat community in Ghana accounts for about 8% of the population, with a diverse mix of cultures calling the country home. Therefore, there are plenty of non-profit opportunities as well as jobs in the telecommunications, mining and transportation industries. Ghana is situated close to the equator with hot and humid temperatures most of the year.

The Seychelles is a beach lovers paradise.

The Seychelles

These idyllic islands is a beach lovers paradise made up of 115 islands. The main islands, Mahe and Praslin, are where the majority of residents live. Tourism is the main industry in the Seychelles, and most expats end up renting while living there due to the restrictions placed on foreign buyers. The cost of living in the Seychelles is more expensive than other parts of Africa, but still cheaper than the UK. The cost to rent a small flat in an expensive area is about £1,000 a month.
